The United Way Campaign Kick-off a Huge Success! We ate, we drank, we enjoyed the sounds of the Rolling Blackouts Review, and then we savored delicious dippables in a chocolate fountain. It was awesome! Did I mention the chocolate fountain? We'd like to thank Sierra Nevada, all of our wonderful donors, and our fantastic volunteers for putting together such a great night — we'll be counting the days until next year when we can do it all again! Miracles Happen: The Catholic Ladies Relief Society The small unassuming sign in the window belies a small but mighty organization that serves the homeless and needy of our community. This is the home of the Catholic Ladies Relief Society. Services include emergency food and lodging, assistance with utility bills, and payment for prescription medication. In addition, they provide gasoline vouchers or bus tickets, allowing clients to get to their medical appointments. Staffing includes two part time employees and about 40 volunteers. The Community Food Locker, established by the Catholic Ladies Relief Society #3, provides emergency food to more than 9,000 people annually. Last year 4,420 childen ate, thanks to this organization. It is staffed by members of the Catholic Ladies Relief Society as well as members of local churches and community volunteers. In addition, almost all of the food is donated. Two major food drives, the Boy Scout drive in November and the National Association of Letter Carrers food drive held in May are major providers of donated food. Many volunteers help to sort donated food and take it to the storage locker. It is truly miraculous that the Catholic Ladies Relief Society serves so many with so litte. Community donations, the United Way, and the volunteer spirit help to bring about miracles for many families.
